Pay The House – Card Collecting or Go Broke Trying

So, it’s not Next Fest yet, but, I got emailed by the developer of this game after they had found my review of their other game. I’m not being paid, the demo is free like any other, but I am a sucker for people who find this space and reach out. So, I’ve played through the limited demo, and made sure it’s free of AI, and here we are.

The game itself is fairly simple, and in demo terms, kinda easy. Your goals in the first layer are low enough that it’s easy to complete one of the midtier sets or above and pay it off. Dragging it out and trying to complete more sets before you do will give you plenty of cash to buy trinkets. You also can’t really go broke off buying the cheapest card sets alone. Your repayment costs will likely do that if you’re not careful. You’ll at least earn back at least what you spent on cards if you’re desperate enough to keep gambling with them.

It’s certainly in your best interest to buy the more expensive packs to hunt the more rewarding sets easier. Such is where the gambling comes in, but even then the odds felt good enough that I could expand my vault, make small repayments on my debt, and have a decent buffer to sit on for repayment day.

Being just a demo, there is plenty of room for economy and odds adjustments. I also could have just had a fairly lucky run. It was a fairly short experience (I spent 20 minutes), so people are more than encouraged to give it a shot and determine for themselves.

Pay The House is up to try now, with a target release date in Q4.
